EU Urged to Act Against States Failing to Protect Media Freedom and Journalists

A new report we contributed to highlights gaps in the European Commission’s analysis and recommendations in its 2025 Rule of Law Report. Liberties’ Gap Analysis: The European Commission’s Rule of Law Report 2025, published today, is its third evaluation of the EC’s annual Rule of Law Report. Over the past three years, the Commission has issued 500+ recommendations, averaging five per country annually. However, the data reveal troubling trends that contrast with the Commission’s optimistic tone.
